I learned early in my career how exhilarating it was to capture an athlete’s great “moment in time.” From the sidelines of basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, football and soccer fields, track ovals, golf and cross country courses, water skiing ponds and many other sports venues, I have been documenting athletes’ accomplishments for the past 40 years.

I remember that very first high school basketball game and the feeling I got a few good shots. I couldn’t wait to get back to the darkroom to develop and hold that strip of film up to the light to see what I got. What an adrenaline rush. I was hooked.

While digital photography took away some of that anticipation, the challenge will forever be there.

Over the years, I photographed my share of referees’ backsides, but I also discovered I have a knack to get the kind of shots that kept me going back game after game after game.

Through sports writing/photography positions at three daily newspapers, seven years as a college Public Relations Assistant and 21 years as a college Sports Information Director, my right index finger keeps pushing me to get the next frame able image.

In September 2016, I retired from Lander (S.C.) University and started Bob Stoner Images. While I have focused my business on sports photography, I have been hired to shoot quite a few other things, too (except I don’t do weddings). We can set up the umbrella lights and backgrounds and do a portrait, go to the park to get some family pics, or let me put together a graphic or collage. Let me know.

A former competitive runner at the prep and collegiate levels, I grew up in Pineville, Ky., graduated from Bell County High School in 1976, and later earned bachelor’s degrees in Journalism and Spanish from Western Kentucky University ’80.
